Elfin Lakes
Eager to do a new hike but not too informed, I started on a hike that has been calling me for some time. We got to the trail in the afternoon on a sunny April day. As we approached the start of the trail we were shocked to see snow...lots and lots of snow...and people cross-country skiing down it.
Did I mention I wasn't well informed? Well, I wasn't well prepared either. The four of us wearing hikers started up the snow. Snow was a bit slippery but quite solid so we had no problems at first. We had to dodge the many cross-country skiers coming down as well as the occasional snow-shoeer and even a snowboarder.
As we got further along the trail the snow started getting way deeper and softer. We started sinking into it a little but determined to get somewhere we kept going.
We were nearing the first shelter. By this point most of us were sinking to our knees in the snow. It was getting really tiring to move. I somehow managed to avoid getting any snow in my hiking shoes but then one of my friends started running ahead because he saw the shelter so I followed him and ran too...got my shoes and socks soaked.
We stopped for lunch at the shelter, took some pictures and headed back down after deciding that it would be foolish to attempt reaching the lakes. We were hoping to slide down on our jackets but were unsuccessful. Snow was too sticky.
Fun hike despite the fact we couldn't reach the lakes.
