Cheakamus Lake
My friend asked me to go on a short easy hike so I figured I'd give this one a try. After looking at the stats for the hike however I decided it would be more fun to take our bikes there. Even though I had driven up the logging road to the trail-head before, I couldn't quite remember the steepness or the length of the logging road so I told my friend it will be a nice easy ride up...which is what I expected.
We first stopped in Whistler village to run some errands. I also needed to inflate the tires on my bikes so on the way back to our destination we stopped at one of the gas stations there. Of course, the air pump was broken so we went to the other gas station...which also had a broken air pump... so back to whistler we went to buy a new bike pump. After this little adventure we got to the bottom of the logging road again and started the ride up.
We quickly discovered how steep that trail really is. I didn't have too many problems as I'm used to this kind of thing but my friend who doesn't bike too often ended up walking his bike all the way up. The bugs were incredibly irritating so having to wait for my friend each time I got over another hill became a bit tiring.
Once we reached the trailhead things were good again. We biked quickly through a fun trail towards the lake and continued on it until it as far as we could. The trail eventually became too rough, with huge roots and rocks sticking out of the ground so we stopped for lunch. The lake is beautiful and the mountains around it quite nice. We took a bunch of shots with my camera and headed back.
Road back was mostly uneventful except for the start where I fell off my bike twice. Having just eaten I was feeling a bit too sleepy and made some stupid mistakes. First time I fell sideways off the trail but caught myself so I didn't get hurt. Second time I tried going over this tiny log over some mud and didn't have enough speed so I feel sideways into the mud. My foot was stuck deep within the mud and I nearly lost my shoe. I got up, changed socks and I was good to go again.
Reaching the logging road again we descended at full blast down it. I must have gotten down in less than 15 minutes, hopping over big potholes all over the places that I couldn't avoid due to the high speed. Finest part of the whole trip. Made me happy I had shock absorbers on my front wheel...my friend didn't on my other bike so his arms were feeling some pain...
